PREMIO I D
Paraplegic Cell Therapy in Patients with Large Unit,
Jesus Mercedes Zurita and Vaquero, Researchers at University Hospital Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda
Traumatic spinal cord injury is one of the greatest medical and social problems, and there are no effective therapies capable of restoring neurological sequelae that arise as a result thereof.
The award recognizes the research careers of the winners in the field of cell therapy applied to treatment of serious neurological sequelae after spinal cord injury acquired.
It is a social and health program big impact for innovation and its application to patients with severe neurological disability after effects of an acquired spinal cord injury.
It is based on more than 20 years of research entirely in Spain, and has allowed the development of the first human cell therapy registered in our country, Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Competent Authority), with therapeutic indications “traumatic injury to the spinal cord”.
Now, following the development of this research, has initiated a program established Cell Therapy Neurological University Hospital Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda, concerning the execution of no commercial clinical trials for treating patients with nervous system injuries acquired.
This is a pioneering program in Spain, the search for new treatments that can alleviate the serious consequences of causing neurological disability and severe disability.
The main field of application of these new techniques are patients with severe secondary dependence traumatic spinal cord injury.
In Spain the prevalence of traumatic spinal cord injury is estimated to exceed the 30.000 patients, with an incidence of between 800 and 1.000 new cases each year.
El Dr. Jesus Vaquero, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Autonomous University of Madrid and Director of the Neuroscience Research Unit of the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro- Majadahonda and Dr.. Mercedes Zurita, Researcher at Madrid Health Service and Technical Director of the Living Cell Production UINC Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda were the winners by the Cell Therapy Program in Paraplegic patients as highly dependent.
